Learners will inherit the Earth

So, I finished The Expertise Economy and it was a very refreshing reading. It has a couple of insights on how to think about our education and make it more attractive to people and most importantly helping to upskill themselves no matter their age. The book emphasizes a lot that people throughout their careers we are constantly learning and there must be a better way to register these skills and no focusing so much what college you graduated from.

I am a strong believer on this, especially for skilled workers. During the pandemic many people were layoff and some of them have been working in the same company for more than 20 years. Getting back to the job market during a pandemic it is not easy and makes it even harder if people are focusing more on your formal education or age, instead on what you can really bring to the workforce. This is the mentality that companies like Degreed are hoping to change, because it will help determine the level of expertise of an individual and find opportunities for them, so they can continue to growth.

The only thing  I didn’t like about this book is that it can sound like a sales pitch. The authors are the founders of Degreed, so they do like to describe how Degreed can help to solve these problems, but at least for me it was a little bit too much. However, they do talk about other companies that want to make learning more accessible.
